NPA rebels disarm town mayor, security escorts PDF Print E-mail

Pitogo, Zamboanga del Sur, Mayor Richard Medalla Garban and his security escorts were disarmed by 15 heavily armed New People’s Army guerrillas in Barangay Mati, Zamboanga del Sur yesterday morning.

In his report to the San Miguel Municipal Police Station, Garban said that he and his bodyguards were aboard his vehicle that was stopped by the NPAs who were clad in PNP uniform in front of Mati Elementary School,  Barangay  Mati,  San Miguel, around 6:30 a.m.

Garban told the police that the NPAs ordered them to alight from the vehicle after which he and his security escorts were disarmed.

After disarming them, the rebels ordered them to get back to their vehicle. Garban andhis escorts left the place and rushed to the police station to report the incident.

The mayor said the rebels took a baby armalite rifle bearing serial number  GO32274, a .45 caliber pistol with serial number BG00677,  a 9MM Pistol  with serial number  X911101488 owned by the mayor, a caliber 5.56 M16 Armalite Rifle,  Elisco, with serial number  RPO54700 and a .45 caliber pistol  Norinco brand with serial number106478 owned by PO3 Julito Hacotano y Garban, security  escort of the mayor.

Responding to the incident, men of the Provincial Public Safety company led by Police Supt. Michael Palermo and a team from the Guipos Municipal Police Station led by Insp. Harry Velez rushed to the scene and later conducted follow-up operations.

Police said the NPA rebels were at the said place were waiting for any vehicle to pass on the way to Pagadian City. The rebels fled towards the hinterland of Barangay Ocapan and Barangay Calube, both in San Miguel.
