Demonstrating unity in the fight against tuberculosis (TB), some 8,000 people representing multi-sectoral groups in the city converged Sunday for the “Walk, Run and Bike” event highlighting the observance of Lung Month.

Jointly organized by the City Health Office, Department of Health, Rotary Clubs of Zamboanga and Zamboanga Hermosa TB Council, the physical fitness event kicked off at the Paseo del Mar with the Zumba dance activity. It ended at the City Coliseum in Tetuan where a commemorative program highlighted by an open jingle competition and raffles for a cause.

Mayor Beng Climaco graced the occasion along with DOH Regional Director Teogemes Baluma, City Health Officer Rodelin Agbulos and the presidents of the different Rotary Clubs of Zamboanga.

The Labuan group won the Open Jingle competition while the Raffles for a Cause had 3 flat screen television sets for its major prizes. Proceeds of the raffle will go to the Zamboanga Hermosa TB Council for the implementation of its anti-TB strategies.

Agbulos said the event was only one of the many anti-TB efforts jointly implemented by the CHO, Zamboanga Hermosa TB Council, DOH and the civic groups for the total discrimination of tuberculosis in Zambonaga.

Because of all the initiatives, TB in Zamboanga has slid to the 16th place in the morbidity list from the previous 7th place and number 7 in the mortality rate compared to before when it was number 4.

“We are now reaping the fruits of all our efforts”, the City Health Officer said, as he congratulated the Zamboanga Hermosa TB Council and the CHO staff for the excellent work.

Just recently, the city’s Abstract on TB prevention and control has been chosen to be presented in Thailand during a gathering of world anti-TB advocates on November 15.

The 2013 Lung Month celebration is themed “Tuldokan ang TB, Ikalat ang Tamang Impormasyon Hindi and Diskriminasyon,” which focuses on the mitigation of tuberculosis (Tubercle Bacillus), a common infectious disease caused by strains of mycobacteria that usually attack the lungs of victims.

Aside from the DOH and Rotary Clubs, partner agencies of the Zamboanga Hermosa TB Council include the ParLinking Initiatives and Networking to Control TB (TB-LINC), World Vision-Social Mobilization on TB (SMT), Philippine Coalition Against Tuberculosis (Philcat), Zamboanga Coalition Against Tuberculosis (ZAMCAT), TB Task Force Zamboanga and AGAPE Human Development Foundation Inc. and TB champions from the various districts of the city. — Sheila Covarrubias
