Distance is never a hindrance for the 11 first year high school students of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) in Zamboanga City from reaching out to the typhoon Maring victims in Manila.

On Friday, August 23, 2013, they took the initiative to dole out goodies to the needy in their own little ways. Through concerted effort, they donated canned goods, shoes, and old clothes, among others.

Mr. Gabriel Sison, Chapter Service Representative for Red Cross Youth in Zamboanga City, repeatedly thanked the students for their voluntary service in answering the call to support and aid to those who are in the calamity-stricken place.

Mr. Joel C. Macasinag, OIC-Principal of the Integrated Laboratory School, Secondary Department (ILS-SD) in WMSU commended the group for an exemplary work worth emulating. “This is the first time that I have seen a group of freshmen high school students in this university who spearheaded an activity such as this. If all other students are like them, this country will be a very good country,” Macasinag said.

The Philippine Red Cross, Zamboanga City Chapter, will forward these relief goods to victims in Manila, the city that was battered by Typhoon Maring, causing massive flooding in that place and in its neighboring provinces.

It is not yet too late for others to follow footsteps of these young ones and to share the blessings with those who are in dire need of assistance. — Carl Richard C. Dagalea, WMSU Red Cross Youth Organization Adviser
