Five persons were arrested by the police for engaging in spider-fighting in Pagadian City last Friday afternoon.

Arrested were Edwin Castanedas, 33, of Tukuran, Marlon Mahusay, Ryan Lasala, Thelmo dela Cruz, and Atabillo Yjos.

Police said that they have received a call from a concern citizen around 4p.m. informing them that an illegal gambling was being held by a group of persons in San Pedro District.

Policemen rushed to the said place and saw a group of persons betting on spider fighting.

Some of the bettors scampered after seeing the men in uniform. But five of them were cornered. Some of the arrested gamblers claimed that they were not aware that spider fighting is illegal, but police told them that betting money in the course of the game already constitutes illegal gambling.

Recovered by the police were 36 live spiders kept on match boxes, betting money, gambling paraphernalia such as ruler, table, four syringes and medicines believed to be used to condition spiders. — Noning R. Antonio
