The Department of Education-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao will soon implement a biometric system school enrollment program for kindergarten students.

The program was announced by DepEd ARMM Secretary Jamar Kulayan to the participants of the seminar workshop on “Regional Action Planning, Performance – Based Bonus ( PBB ) Compliance and Consultation on the DepEd Rationalization Plan“ sponsored by Australian Aid and Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao (BEAM)-ARMM last August 21 to 23 at the Grand Astoria Hotel.

The seminar-workshop was attended by School Superintendents, Assistant  Superintendents, Supervisors, Supervisors of Science, Math and  Filpino, Supervisors on Alternative Learning System, Kindergaten Coordinators, Division  Pilot Madrasah Coordinators, Human Resources Management Officers, Planning Officers of Schools Dvisions of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and Lamitan City.

Kulayan explained that the biometric system school enrollment program is being implemented for kindergarten  students to eliminate malpractices and wrongdoings of some school officials.  It was discovered by Kulayan’s officers during ocular inspections and actual counting of students that the reports submitted by some school officials to DepEd ARMM are deceitful.

For example, in one barangay, it was listed 50 students, but the actual number is only 20 as discovered during inspections.

Also, some school officials in some barangays enrolled students who are four years old which is not allowed by DepEd.

Moreover school records of kindergarten students showed that some mothers delivered babies twice a year.

Kulayan warned school officials to be extra careful in submiiting their reports and stop the malpratices and wrongdoings because he will not tolerate it.

“Those who will be caught will be punished,” Kulayan said. — Allen Abastillas
