The Philippine National Police in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PNP-ARMM) are in the thick of security preparations for the coming barangay ang Sangguniang Kabataan elections in October.

Chief Supt. Noel Delos Reyes, PNP-ARMM police regional director, said his office is closely coordinating with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and other Comelec deputies to come up with security plans that will ensure Safe and Fair (SAFE) elections in the region’s five provinces.

“We foresee a peaceful barangay elections in the ARMM,” Delos Reyes said, taking a cue from the recent national and midterm elections which turned out to be peaceful and orderly.

ARMM is composed of the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

No failure of elections was ever declared in the ARMM in last May’s balloting, an unprecedented feat since balloting in the past 20 years in ARMM had always been marred by violence and declaration of failure of elections.

With 3,256,140 population, ARMM has a registered voter of 1,882,338 as of May elections, scattered in the region’s 116 municipalities and 2,490 barangays.

Delos Santos said the village and SK polls will be peaceful because it will not be as intense as local elections.

However, he said, the PNP is prepared for any eventuality that may arise ahead of the elections.
