PAGADIAN CITY –  A two-year-old boy was killed while an estimated P2.5 million worth of properties went up in smoke in a fire that hit this city Thursday.

City Fire Marshall Rheno Cimafranca said the fire of still unknown origin broke out around 6:30 a.m. Thursday at a two-storey house in Purok Makiangayon, Barangay Balangasan, this city.

He said the house is owned by Aurelio Pabatao but is temporarily occupied by the family of Rolando Lorona, who has a five-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son.

Cimafranca said Rolando and his wife, Rosalinda, were not around during the incident since they went to the town of Midsalip to find a house helper.

He said Lorona’s children were left in the care of their 15-year-old aunt, Geraldine Maluncas, who was on an errand when the fire broke out.

Maluncas, upon her return, managed to save her five-year-old niece but not her two-year-old nephew as the fire rapidly engulfed the entire house, according to Cimafranca.

He said the neighbors of the Lorona family tried to put off the fire while firemen were still rushing to the scene but to no avail as strong wind fanned the blaze to an uncontrollable situation.

The fire, which lasted for two-and-a-half-hours, razed to the ground eight houses including the one occupied by the Lorona family and partially destroyed three others.

The origin of the fire has yet to be ascertained by the investigator of the local fire station, according to Cimafranca.
