Preparations for the City’s hosting of the Zampen-Basulta Peace and Security Summit are now in full steam.

The Technical Working Group (TWG) supervised by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) met Thursday for the second time to set mechanisms for the summit which is scheduled for the first or second week of September.

The idea of holding a peace and security summit was proposed by Mayor Beng Climaco during an inter-agency meeting at the Western Mindanao Command last August 13 in the presence of Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa and Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin. She then sought technical support from the two secretaries, who immediately gave their nod of approval.

The  proposed summit will be participated by military, police, local chief executives and other officials from Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan-Sulu-Tawi-tawi (ZAMBASULTA) area to discuss prevailing peace and security issues.

Among the specific topics proposed for discussion are gun ban, kidnap for ransom groups, gun for hire, smuggling of rice and other contraband items, illegal drugs and numerous others.

The summit is expected to be graced by Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas including Secretaries Ochoa and Gazmin and other top officials from Manila. It will conclude with the signing of a covenant where the participants will commit to abide by the things they have agreed to comply or follow during the summit. — Sheila Covarrubias
