Bureau of Internal Revenue Regional Director Rozil Lozares yesterday commended the seven district directors under Revenue Region No.15 for their tax collection efforts that resulted to high collection that surpassed the target goal for year 2010.

During yesterday’s launching of the Regional Tax Campaign at Marcian Garden Convention Center, Lozares together with some top officials of BIR central office, expressed confidence that its target goal this year would easily be achieved so long BIR personnel will further strengthen the effort in tax collection, and of course with the cooperation of the taxpayers themselves.

“I am happy to announce that we exceeded our target last year. The central office has given as the goal of P2,780, 304,000, but at the end of the year, we were able to collect P2, 903,853, 417. 31 or an excess of P123 million,” Lozares told newsmen in a press conference yesterday afternoon.
Lozares said they failed to achieve their target goal in 2009 but because of the so-called soft approach they implemented in encouraging taxpayers to voluntarily visit their respective office to settle their obligations, “we were able to increase our collection.”

According to Lozares, the Revenue Districts of Pagadian City, Zamboanga City, Dipolog City, Province of Taw-Tawi, Basilan and Jolo, have contributed a lot to the effective tax collection effort.

“We simply adopted a very simple approach in order to encourage taxpayers to pay their taxes due to the government. In Zamboanga office, for example, it’s the employees themselves who are assisting the taxpayers in their business transactions. In fact, many of the barter traders in Canelar have started registering their businesses, an indication that our approach is effective,” Lozares pointed out.

However, he admitted that there are still delinquent taxpayers in places under Revenue Region No.15 but this could easily be resolved with the kind of approach that they are adopting.

“We will continue talking with these people for them to voluntarily visit our office and pay the right taxes. We are even doing away with imposing surcharges and penalties so long they will pledge to religiously pay what is due the government. Effective collection effort will surely be a great factor for us to achieve our goal,” Lozares said. — Jimmy Villaflores
