The Philippine Red Cross-Zamboanga City Chapter yesterday organized a day-long bloodletting activity at City Hall as a tribute to Mayor Beng Climaco who is celebrating her birthday today, September 7.

Over 500 volunteers coming from the different state colleges including police and military agencies turned up for the bloodletting activity that started 10am and lasted until 4pm.

Red Cross staff said the activity was meant to be a gift not only to the birthday celebrant but also to humanity, as the benefits that will be derived from the bloodletting event will trickle down to the people.

Mayor Climaco has expressed gratitude to the Red Cross for initiating the event and to the hundreds of students, policemen and soldiers who voluntarily donated blood for the safety and welfare of others.

Climaco, who is a Red Cross galloner said donating blood is an act of heroism for it is saving other people’s lives. Aside from the benefits that other people can get out of blood donation, the same can be beneficial to the donor himself as it rejuvenates one’s body.

The other day, Mayor Climaco headed off to the Zamboanga City Jail for her traditional outreach mission with women inmates where she shared foodstuff and relief goods.

She likewise took the opportunity to share and listen to concerns and experiences of women inmates.

As practiced every year, Climaco shuns birthday parties and instead celebrates the day with outreach missions after attending mass. Women and children are the beneficiaries of her outreach activities. — Sheila Covarrubias
