A policeman was fighting for his life in the hospital Friday after he was shot by a gunman in the latest of a spate of shooting incidents in the province of Basilan.
SPO1 Rudy Trumata, who was a warrant server of the Isabela City police station, was shot at Calle Posporo, Barangay San Rafael, Isabela City, Basilan Friday night.
Trumata was on his way to report for duty aboard his motorcycle around 7 p.m. when two men riding in tandem on another motorcycle opened fire on him. He sustained multiple bullet bounds in the body.
The gunmen immediately fled after shooting the policeman.   
Police teams were dispatched to track down the killers, but as of press time on suspects have been apprehended.
Like in Zamboanga City, gun violence has brought fear among residents in the two cities in Basilan — Isabela and Lamitan .
The latest shooting came three days after a field credit officer of a micro finance firm and her driver were shot dead and robbed in Lamitan City.
Jennifer Timtim and Saud Macalangcom were on their way home aboard a motorcycle after collecting loan dues from clients when gunmen on another motorcycle opened fire on them at Sitio Baroy, Ubit before noon Tuesday. Bother were dead on the spot.
The gunmen fled with Timtim’s bag containing money they collected from clients.
Last August 15, A cooperative treasurer was shot dead in Lamitan City.
Joseph Fernandez of Isabela City and treasurer of AFAMCO was gunned down around 8 a.m. along the highway at Sitio Baroy, Barangay Sengal, Lamitan,
Fernandez was on his way to work aboard a motorcycle when two men aboard another motorcycle tailed him. At Sitio Baroy, they sidled up with Fernandez’ motorcycle and the backrider opened fire on him.
It was learned that Fernandez managed to fight back by pulling out his.45 cal. pistol and returning fire on his assailants.
However he lost strength with five gunshot wounds in the body and later died along the road.
The killers ran away with with an undetermined amount of money and .45 cal. pistol taken from Fernandez’ possession.
