A suspected MNLF ‘spotter’ was killed, his companion was arrested while another escaped during a police operation along Don Alfaro St., Tetuan last Monday afternoon.

Killed was Benrazier Imbin Y Atik, 30, single,  and a resident of Mutual Homes, Katatagan, Upper Calarian, Zamboanga City. Arrested was Arthur Alih Y Mussah.

As gunbattle continued Monday between government troops and MNLF rebels,  policemen were monitoring and patrolling the Tetuan area where several stray bullets fell,  when they spotted three men aboard two motorcycles acting suspiciously.

Police approached and called their attention as a standard operating procedure, however, one of the three grabbed the M4 carbine rifle of one of the policemen. A scuffle ensued during which the suspect ran and climbed up the grill gate of the house of businessman Pat Cabato. Policemen who chased him, thinking that he could hold the occupants of the house hostage, opened fire hitting his head.

The suspect fell and died on the spot.

Alih was arrested while the third suspect sped aboard his motorcycle.

DZT gathered that the three suspects were all MNLF “spotters” who had been feeding information to the rebels locked in battle with the government troops.

The trio reportedly guided rebels on where to aim their 50 caliber machinegun.

Earlier, several slugs of 50 caliber machinegun had hit houses and a university in Tetuan. It was learned that the rebels on the ground fire their guns on civilian populace whenever government troops try to assault them. – Dan Toribio Jr.
