Government forces yesterday started the clearing operations in the areas of conflict.

Composite units from the PNP and military along with bomb experts clearing the compound of the Zamboanga City Medical Center.

Chief Insp. Ariel Huesca, Police Regional Information Officer, explained that the clearing operations are intended to retrieve any unexploded explosive and ammunition.

Huesca said that if there is  any recovery of explosives, a safe procedure will be carried out by the explosive and ordnance division in retrieving such devices.

The clearing operations are also aimed at recovering all buried slain rebels in the area. It will be done with the help of personnel from the PNP Crime Laboratory and physicians.

In addition, government forces seek to gather evidences in the area that would help in the prosecution of captured MNLF rebels.

Huesca said the presence of newsmen in the clearing operations plays an important role to make process transparent to the public.

It was learned that the clearing operation will take more than a week considering the large size ofthe conflict areas. —  Dan Toribio Jr.
