Zamboanga City has new police chief.

Sr. Supt. Dennis Basngi assumed on Tuesday as OIC- City Police Director vice Sr. Supt. Jose Chiquito Malayo who was reportedly relieved by PNP higher command.

Basngi was Iloilo City Police Director before he was appointed to his position in Zamboanga City.

Police Regional Office-9 chief information officer Supt. Ariel Huesca disclosed that the termination of Malayo’s designation was just a part of the PNP administrative process wherein he should be given a break after a commendable and grueling efforts during the standoff, aside from the fact he was celebrating his birthday on Tuesday.

Huesca said that Malayo’s performance during his stint as OIC of City Police Office was meritorious, invaluable and exceptional.

PNP also recognizes Malayo’s effort in persuading 24 MNLF rebels to surrender during the stand-off in Mampang, which made him controversial as many residents became suspicious of his act.

Huesca added that there were operational matters and actions taken that need to be presented to Police Regional office 9 Director Chief Supt. Juanito Vaño in-connection with Malayo’s status.

Huesca affirmed that Malayo has been subjected to investigation after which PNP did not see any irregularities in his part after he was able to convince the 24 MNLF to surrender during the stand off. – Dan Toribio Jr.
