Incessant rains the past three days inundated low lying areas temporarily displacing families.

Hard hit areas were barangays Tugbungan where 200 families were evacuated to safer grounds; San Jose Gusu with 200 families affected, Baliwasan (Manggal) with 70 families affected and Divisoria (Lumiyap) with 39 families.

City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr., action officer of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) said flooding was also reported in Patalon and several other low lying areas.

Coast Guard and Red Cross personnel rescued families in Tugbungan while personnel from the Bureau of Fire spearheaded the rescue operations in San Jose Gusu, he said.

Continuous rains with strong winds, spawned by inter-tropical convergence zone battered the city since Friday swelling rivers and placing low lying areas under water.

Orendain said CDRRMC member-agencies are on alert for any emergency situations brought about by the inclement weather.

He appealed to people residing along riverbanks and flood-prone areas to temporarily seek safer grounds, as the weather condition remains abnormal.

Even families in evacuation centers, set up due to the Zamboanga crisis were not spared from floodwaters. Evacuees from the Enriquez Sports Complex in Baliwasan were transferred to the Zamboanga National High School-West.

Mayor Beng Climaco and Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman visited the evacuees at the Baliwasan grandstand Saturday to check on the condition of the displaced families.

New tents were also set with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-member organization.        Tugbungan was one of the areas deemed critical during last month’s crisis involving a standoff between government and Moro National Liberation Front forces.

Zamboanga City is still recovering from the crisis,

Also on Saturday, bad weather conditions forced the cancellation of flights between Manila and Zamboanga, including:

- 2P-997 (Manila to Zamboanga) - 2P-998 (Zamboanga to Manila) - 2P-993 (Zamboanga to Manila)

Earlier Saturday, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Taluksangay Resettlement Site for some of the evacuees. — Sheila Covarrubias
