Soldiers of the Army’s 104th Infantry Brigade composed of combined troops with one company each from 1st Scout Ranger Battalion and 64th Infantry Battalion clashed with Abu Sayyaf gunmen led by Juhair Aliman aliang Botong Barangay Mebak, Sumisip, Basilan around 8 Monday.

According to Col. Carlito Galvez, commander of 104th Brigade, the Army’s operation in the area is to clear the Basilan Circumferential Road (BCR) to ensure the safety of motorists. It was also intended to neutralize the lawless elements threatening the major thoroughfare along Barangays Sapah Bulak and Upper Cabengbeng both in Sumisip, Basilan.

Government forces suffered two casualties, while two were killed on the ASG side and two others wounded and captured by the operating troops.

Casualty evacuation were ongoing for the wounded including the captured ASGs for medical treatment.

Firefight continued until late afternoon.
