After almost two weeks of operations, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported yesterday afternoon that 50% of the critical areas have been subjected to clearing by government forces under Task Force Suyod.

According to PNP Spokesperson PCInsp. Ariel Huesca, a total of 1,756 establishments and structures in the critical areas are subject to clearing operations. Of this number, 133 have already been officially cleared and turned over, including the Shrine of the Nuestra Se?ora del Pilar, and most recently, the Sta. Barbara mosque and Madrasah.

Mayor Beng Climaco considered the turnovers of these religious institutions a very significant undertaking, especially in light of the celebration of the Fiesta Pilar for the Catholic faithful yesterday, October 12, and the upcoming celebration del Eid’l Adha for the Muslim community on October 15.

“This is monumental proof that Zamboangueños—Christians, Muslims and Lumads continue to live in peace and harmony and will together work to help Zamboanga get back to its feet after a series of tribulations,” said Climaco.

Aside from the turned over establishments, the clearing operations have also successfully recovered 338 unexploded ordnances, 17 firearms and 46 cadavers.

Meanwhile, the City Health Office has provided government forces several supplies of doxycycline as prophylaxis against leptospirosis. CHO Dr. Rodelin Agbulos stated that there is a possibility of an outbreak in critical areas, considering that there are decomposing bodies still to be recovered. — Jasmine Mohammadsali/City Hall PIO
