Two barangays are now 100% cleared according to government forces under Task Force Suyud.

The all-clear was given to the barangays of Rio Hondo and Zone IV after they were cleared for unexploded ordnances, booby traps, debris, firearms and possible MNLF stragglers.

The target of Task Force Suyud and its ongoing clearing operations have been the areas in the four barangays which were directly and indirectly affected by the armed conflict – Rio Hondo, Sta. Barbara, Sta. Catalina, and Zone IV.

While the MNLF-Misuari forces never made it to Zone IV, the barangay was closed off due to its proximity to the critical zone, and the number of government establishments, including the City Hall, located in the area.

With this development, efforts will now focus on clearing the areas of Sta. Barbara (20-30% cleared) and Sta. Catalina (70-80% cleared).

Phase 2 of the clearing operations officially began on September 29, prioritizing government offices and other vital installations in the affected areas. The sweep began with the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) facility, and gradually moved towards establishments in the surrounding areas of Sta. Barbara, Lustre Street, Martha Drive, Rio Hondo, Sitio Aplaya and Campo Muslim.

Since then, 2,006 establishments – classified as burned, slightly damaged and totally damaged – were subjected to clearing.

Of this figure, 23 were government establishments which include the Bureau of Internal Revenue, the Hall of Justice, the Central Bank of the Philippines, and the Land Bank of the Philippines.

The daily operations have also yielded a total of 396 unexploded ordnances, 19 firearms, and 53 cadavers.

Meanwhile, a total of 299 cases have been filed against the MNLF-Misuari faction members who are currently detained at the San Ramon Penal Colony. — Jasmine Mohammadsali/ City Hall PIO
