When everybody thought the area is cleared, a fire broke out in Asinan, Barangay Kasanyangan Wednesday night destroying more than 50 houses.

Kasanyangan is one of the six critical areas occupied by MNLF rebels from Sept. 9 up to three weeks later. Authorities have yet to declare the village cleared of MNLF attackers.

Firemen battled the flames for three hours from 10:30 p.m. up after midnight.

It was not known who started the fire, because since Sept. 9, the village has been deserted by residents who are mostly now in evacuation centers.

Government troops have been conducting clearing operations in the village and other affected areas for several days now.

City Fire Marshall Dominador Zabala Jr. said that they estimated the damage from Wednesday night’s fire at P1 million. The houses burnt were located on the mangrove area of Kasanyangan.

Zabala said they had not determined the fire’s origin as of yet and that investigation was still being conducted.

The fire was put under control around 1 a.m.
