The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Field Office-9 and its four provincial offices will observe the golden celebration of the Fish Conservation Week on October 13-18, 2013 with a slew of activities to be undertaken simultaneously around the whole ZamPen (Region 9) region.

The Fish Conservation Week is a yearly undertaking of the Bureau designed to increase awareness on the importance of protecting and conserving the country’s fisheries and aquatic resources. It was institutionalized by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 176 series of 1963, and falls on the third week of October.

This year’s celebration will be marked by teach-ins in various high schools around the region on topics such as, the Closed Season for Sardines, Fishery Law Enforcement, Red Tide and the Salient Features of the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998 (RA 8550). Aquaculture inputs like fish fingerlings and  seaweed seedlings will be seeded in selected communal water bodies and/or distributed to deserving fisherfolk in the three provinces of the region.

To bring its services closer to its clients, BFAR 9 will conduct mobile registration and licensing of fishing boats in selected towns in the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur.

Coastal clean-ups and mangrove reforestation activities will also be undertaken in some towns of Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga del Norte to dramatize the importance of preserving the coastal environment.

A big part of the celebration will be the turn-over of the PAMANA (Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan) projects for the municipalities of Buug and Talusan and the BUB Bottom-Up Budget) project for Sindangan. Buug will receive Php. 5,227,850.00 for its Fishport Rehabilitation project in barangay Pamintayan, Talusan will receive Php. 1,750,000.00 for its Mini Iceplant project and Sindangan will receive Php. 845,500.00 for its Backyard Inland Fishpond Development project.
