Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III died of multiple organ yesterday at the Philippine Heart Center.

He was 75 years old.

Jacel Kiram-Hasan, the Sultan’s daughter, said in a media interview that her father had been battling kidney problems.    “He passed away (at) 4:00 a.m. due to organ failure,” she said.

Jacel said he was confined at the Philippine Heart Center since Thursday.

Last February, Kiram’s followers entered Sabah and engaged Malaysian forces in a standoff that ended with violent shootouts in March.

Malaysian authorities eventually charged several of Kiram’s followers for terrorism and waging war on the King, the second offense being punishable by death.
