Zamboanga City Fire District (ZCFD) Fire Marshal F/Supt. DominadorF. Zabala, Jr. has recommended to the Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP) Regional Office 9 for the conferment of special and/or medal awards to 81 officers and personnel, who responded in the series of fires during theZamboanga crisis brought about by the attack carried out by the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) Misuari Faction Group on September 9.

Zabala said the recommendation is based on the criteria for incentive and special/medal awards under Chapter V of the BFP Personnel Mechanism Manual of 1993 aimed to boost the morale and enhance productivity of government uniformed workers. The award can be awarded by the DILG and/or BFP National Headquarters.

He said that during the Zamboanga crisis which lasted for more than a month,  when some 300 fighters of the MNLF staged an early dawn attack on Muslim-dominated barangays Sta. Catalina, Sta. Barbara, Rio Hondo and Mariki and started burning several houses on the second day to give them way to escape from government forces.

Zabala also said that more than 30 fire calls were reported and duly and swiftly responded by the 81 officers and personnel from various fire stations and sub stations under the ZCFD despite the risks and threats on their lives from the day to day exchange of heavy gunfire between government forces and MNLF rebels who also fired at firetrucks to prevent them from extinguishing the fires that have already razed thousands of houses or similar structures.

“More than 9,000 buildings/structures and houses mostly made of light materials were believed to have razed to the ground and roughly P213 million worth of properties destroyed by fires during these unfortunate incidents,”Zabala said.
