Communist rebels are extorting money from rubber farmers and miners in Zamboanga Sibugay.
Police Regional Office 9 Director Chief Supt. Elpidio Z. De Asis Jr. disclosed that last week government troopers engaged in gunbattles with communist rebels in two separateclashes in the hinterlands of the municipalities of Bayog and Kabasalan.

De Asis said he received an information from intelligence operatives that the miners in Bayog are earning good income. because the municipality is rich with mineral deposits  like silver and coal.
The rubber farmers in Kabasalan are also enjoying good earnings because rubber extract are in demand in the local and world market, the reason why rebels and lawless elements are extorting money from them.

De Asis has declared red alert in the whole province and directed the Zamboanga Sibugay Police Provincial Office to conduct foot patrol operations and random check points  in the two areas  to ensure the safety and security of the people.

The police regional director explained that policemen under his command are doing their best to safeguard all communities in the region.

Police troopers are assigned in remote areas as the region is large and every PNP operation is carried out  in coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
De Asis also called on the people to help government forces combat lawlessness by giving information through cellphones. — Allen Abastillas
