The Southern City Colleges Bulldogs flexed its muscles just enough to escape undefeated in the recently concluded PCCL City eliminations and earn the right to represent the city in the regional and hopefully in the national finals in Metro Manila.

The wards of coach Edney Morones defeated Basilan State College in its first assignment 83-80, then followed this up with a 20-0 games topped rout of Pilar College, then outsteadied Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology 107-68, blew away Universidad de Zamboanga next 108-76 before scuttling the Blue Eagles of Ateneo 114-85 to earnb the top spot in the tourney it has lorded over the past few years.

The battle for runner up honors was settled via the quotient system as Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology edged out Ateneo and Basilan State College after finishing with identical win loss slates after the single round robin format of the six-team tournament.

The tourney is being staged under the auspices of the PCCL though commissioner and SBP Area Head Pedro Alfaro Jr.

PCCL tournament commissioner Joel Quintanes disclosed there is a possibility that the elimination  tourney’s second placer ZSCMST, could also advanced to the national finals depending on the outcome of the regionals and who will eventually host the games.

This year’s PCCL participating schools were Southern City Colleges, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Universidad de Zamboanga, Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology, Basilan State College and Pilar College.

Games were played October 19-25 at the Golden Boys Gymnasium along Nunez extension road.

The regional and national finals play dates of the Philippine Collegiate Champion’s League ( PCCL) will be announced later, Quintanes added. — Ed Baños
