A barangay chairman was abducted in Lamitan City, Basilan yesterday on the eve of the Barangay and SK Election.

A sketchy report disclosed that Tandung Ahas Barangay Chairman Alrusdi Kasim Jainul was seized by six gunmen along the Lamitan City-Isabela City in Barangay Baluno.

The report said that Jainul was aboard his vehicle on the way to Isabela when a black van blocked his path in Barangay Baluno. The six gunmen aboard the van alighted and dragged Jainul to their vehicle that sped towards unknown.

Police and military forces were dispatched to trackdown the kidnappers and their hostage.

Some parts of Basilan are considered election hotspots by authorities.

In other parts of Mindanao, New People’s Army guerrillas seized five barangay election candidates in Loreto town, Agusan del Sur on Thursday. The five candidates were declared “prisoners of war.”

A total of 7,060 barangays were placed under the Commission on Election’s (COMELEC) “elections watchlist areas” (EWA). In Metro Manila, 39 barangays are considers EWAs, including 12 in Manila.

Comelec, police, and the military have said they are ready for the 2013 barangay elections, despite a shortage of funds. Police, the armed forces, and the Department of Education asked Comelec for a P500 million budget for the elections.
