In the midst of violence and armed conflict, love often blooms in intensified sweetness. Such is  certainly true for  Al-john and Ferdausia who found their way to love during the standoff  between government forces and Moro National Liberation Front Nur Misuari faction in Zamboanga City.

A twosome seemed made for each other as they obtained their safest haven in one another’s arms during their worst times. Al-john Haiver, 21, is from Barangay Rio Hondo and Ferdausia Jumdail, 15, is also from the same barangay.  Both their families became victims of the conflict and their houses burned.  It’s amazing that they were strangers even if they’re staying in the same place but met their so called “destiny” at the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex, the evacuation center where they are now staying.

Their families share the same room but they were strangers for more than 15 days. Though they were strangers, there is this feeling that somehow they are connected. Al-john was secretly having a feeling for Ferdausia and Ferdausia  feels the same way. Days passed so fast and still feelings were hidden. It was he who first broke the silence. He started making friends with her until he got this courage to “apply” as the way she looked at it. An “application” with no curriculum vitae, cover letter, and even hiring advertisement but equipped with love willing to understand, accept, respect, and even offer everything he has, things supposed to be his alone. The sweet “yes” was heard on the first day of October from her  “bos ko” as in “my boss.”

Discovery Zamboanga, a group of local development communicators, discovered that in a short period of time their relationship faced problems, problems that assessed their love for each other. Jealousy, betrayal, and misunderstanding are just some of the few difficulties they had. There was a time when the situation calls for break-up but the thought of him living without her and her living without him is more than difficult than the problems they encountered together. So they both decided to help and work their relationship.

Asked about how they see each other, their answer is as short as the seven letter  word  but defines long and endless time ,“FOREVER.”

“Young, in love, and filled with dreams,”  that’s how the parents of these young lovers look at them. Both their parents support their relationship since they know that their children’s love is REAL. They and their families agreed to have their wedding ceremony on the first week of November this year. They will have the ceremony and celebration in the evacuation center in a simple yet generous way. Plans are already set and scheduled even the days and months after the wedding.

The fearful feeling of losing one another when the crisis is over and back to its normal situation as he and she with separate lives is what’s in their mind. But in few days it will all just be gone and their forever began as they will be one.

There is this moment filled with romance, like time stood still and bluebirds sang and stars fell from a blazing sky that particular moment really happens.  But if it’s where, when and with whom that are the things we do not know like Al-john and Ferdausia.

They met and found love unexpectedly in diffcult time but everthing turned to be a blessing. There will be a time when we have only memories to cling to but when that time comes hopefully with just few regrets and guilts. So we better take time to make time for our loved ones. — Maricris C.
