Mayor Beng Climaco, Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde and the members of the City Council sat down with the officers of the Government Peace Panel to tackle issues pertaining to the ongoing peace negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and other groups to include the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

The meeting, held at the City Hall Conference Room yesterday morning was requested by the GPH panel headed by Chief Negotiator Miriam Coronel-Ferrer who is here with her members to meet with the different stakeholders.

Mayor Climaco during the meeting reiterated the city’s stand for non-inclusion in the proposed Bangsamoro framework but expressed continuous support to the government’s ongoing peace process.

At the same time, the chief executive called on the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) “to take a very active role in the continuing dialogues with the different secessionist groups.”

She said the OPAPP should also apprise her office on updates of the ongoing dialogues.

The 23-day Zamboanga siege perpetrated by Moro Islamic Liberation Front members affiliated with Nur Misuari was one of the sensitive issues brought to fore by the city officials.

The Council members expressed sentiments that the Zamboanga conflict that caused massive destruction could have been prevented had there have been consistent efforts to dialogue and address the concerns of all groups involved in the peace process.

For its part, the panel explained that the government has never been remiss in its commitment to the peace process stressing that while it was negotiating with the MILF, the panel was also in touch with Misuari and his group.  In fact, Ferrer said, the government was already preparing Misuari’s group’s trip to Indonesia for a review meeting supposed to be held last September 16.

Nevertheless, Mayor Climaco thanked the peace panel for coming over to Zamboanga to meet with the City officials and other concerned groups to update on the current peace efforts of the government.

She reiterated the city’s stand to the ongoing peace process.

Aside from Ferrer, also present during the meeting were National Commission for Muslim Filipinos Secretary Atty. Mehol Sadain; Atty. Anna Tarhata Busman, head of the GPH legal team; Maj. Sirahan, AHJAG Action Officer and Maj. Carlos Sol Jr., head of the GPH-CCH. -- Sheila Covarrubias
