Pandemonium broke loose at the Don Gregorio Evangelista Memorial School (GEMS) in Sta. Catalina yesterday afternoon  after loose information claimed there was firefight nearby.

Parents rushed to the school to fetch their children after hearing from an unidentified source that a gunfight was taking place near the school campus.

Sta. Catalina Barangay Chairman Belman Malandi, Kagawad Jimmy Villaflores and other officials rushed to the school and caught parents rushing out of the campus bringing along with them their children.

Villaflores and Malandi clarified that nothing had happened in Sta. Catalina and nearby barangays and that the reported firefight was false.

It was learned that two parents arrived in the school and took their children. While on their way out, they were telling others there was a reported firefight near the school.

Other parents upon hearing of the the hoax report, also rushed to the school and take their children home.

Teachers reportedly did nothing while parents were trooping  to the school to get their children.

Men of the Zamboanga City Public Safety Company detailed at the Sta. Catalina Barangay Hall also responded to the incident.

Sta. Catalina is one of the six barangays seriously affected by the three-week standoff between government forces and MNLF rebels that left dozens of soldiers, policemen and civilians dead, scores wounded and thousands of houses burned. – Dan Toribio Jr.
