Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday afternoon convened an emergency meeting of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Committee (CDRRMC) in preparation for what could be the most powerful typhoon to hit the country this year codenamed “Yolanda”.

This, despite PAG-ASA’s update as of 4 p.m. yesterday that Zamboanga City was out of “Yolanda’s” path as the city will only experience light to moderate thunderstorms with 60% chances of rain and mostly cloudy today.

The PAG-ASA bulletin further showed that the eye of the super typhoon with winds at 215kph and gustiness of 250kph was located about 700km east of Samar yesterday afternoon, and it is expected to landfall today in Eastern Samar.

Notwithstanding, the CDRRMC put on standby all response units even as Mayor Climaco has this early called on the river bank dwellers and those living in flood-prone areas to be ready and evacuate to higher grounds in case of any eventuality.

Climaco also ordered to put on standby relief supplies like potable water and food to be brought to evacuation centers in case the typhoon’s onslaught will be felt in the city today.

As in the past, the relief operations center will be established at City Hall in case the rain continues, and that CDRRMC members will be called in for duty anytime of the day. — Vic Larato
