A mother and a child were killed after a strong tornado ripped through a remote village in Pikit, North Cotabato, 5:30pm, Wednesday.

Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (MDRRM) officer Tahira Kalantungan said the tornado struck at Barangay Pamalian, killing villagers Bing Jamilon Ocuman and her one-year-child Datu Puti Ocuman.

Doreen Ocuman, also a child of Bing, was seriously wounded in the incident and brought to hospital at the Poblacion.

Kalantungan said a coconut tree fell and hit the nipa hut of the victims.

At least five houses were destroyed in the incident including that of the Ocuman family.

Kalantungan said close to 50 other families in the village were ordered to evacuate to a safer place in anticipation to the weekend onslaught of super typhoon Yolanda seen to affect Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao regions.

The local government has assured assistance to the affected villagers.
