NGCP repairs leaning tower, prevents blackout in Zambo PDF Print E-mail

A leaning transmission tower, if left unrepaired, may lead to widespread disruption in the power delivery service of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). Hence, NGCP immediately conducts remedial works on leaning towers. One such structure was when Tower 56 of its Zamboanga-Pitogo 138-kV transmission line which was found to be slightly leaning.

Upon NGCP’s inspection, it was found out that soil eroded at the base of the structure due to intermittent rains that hit Zamboanga City on the second week of October. This caused the tower foundation to move, making the structure less stable.

Because of the impact of the situation to the Zamboanga grid, NGCP implemented corrective measures right away. Apart from securing and realigning Tower 56 with guy wires, by-pass structures were also constructed to re-route the electricity passing through the original tower. The by-pass structures need to be located approximately 35 meters away from the original structure as the original site is already unstable for tower construction.

Though momentary emergency shutdowns were implemented to facilitate the construction of the by-pass structures, NGCP still managed to transmit power to the rest of Zamboanga City. The project was completed last October 18.

NGCP is a privately owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining, and developing the country’s power grid. It transmits high-voltage electricity through “power superhighways” that include the interconnected system of transmission lines, towers, substations, and related assets. NGCP’s regular maintenance activities and rehabilitation projects aim to enhance the reliability and quality of electricity delivered to grid-connected customers like generators, distributors, and large industries.
