Mayor Beng Climaco and City Health Officer Dr. Rodelin Agbulos the other day gratefully accepted on behalf of the City Government, 5 vaccine refrigerators from the United States Assistance for International Development (USAID) for distribution to main health centers including the makeshift health centers set up in evacuation centers.

The ceremonial turnover of the vaccine refrigerators was done in City Hall recently in the presence of USAID officials to include Ms. Judy Chen- OIC, Chief of the Office of Health; Dr. Dolly Castillo- Chief of Party of the Mindanao Health Project and as Country Director of JHPIEGO; Dr. Alvin Saplan- Regional Team Leader of the Mindanao Health Project (Zamboanga Peninsula and Basulta); Dr. Abdulhalik Kasim- LGU Advisor for Zamboanga City-Mindanao Health Project and Ms. Susan Valencia- Human Resource Officer- Mindanao Health Project among others.

The vaccine refrigerators are intended to store vaccines and other medical products at a stable temperature to ensure they do not lose their effectiveness.

Dr. Agbulos said it is very vital that the vaccines are stored correctly as these are used to immunize the children population in the evacuation centers and in the barangays.

The 5 vaccine refrigerators are the latest batch of assistance that USAID turned over to the City Government for distribution to the thousands of victims of the 23-day Zamboanga conflict. All these aid is in kind and are distributed through the UN agencies, such as the Mindanao Health Project.

Mayor Climaco has expressed deep gratitude to the USAID for its assistance from the USAID to the city which is proof of the long-lasting relationship between the country and the US government.

She stressed that the assistance to the evacuees will go a long way in their early recovery and rehabilitation following the 23-day conflict in Zamboanga City. — Sheila Covarrubias
