Deputy Speaker for Mindanao Beng Climaco Tuesday voted to proceed with the impeachment process against Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez.

“It is our constitutional duty to hold public officials accountable for their actions. Impeachment is part of the duty of Congress with the mandate of the people who elected us. Justice must be served,” Climaco stressed.

As Deputy Speaker and high-ranking official of the House, Rule IX, Section 29 bestowed her ability to vote in all committees.

The 55-member House Committee on Justice, chaired by Iloilo Rep. Niel C. Tupas, Jr., voted to declare the two separate complaints filed against Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez as “sufficient in grounds for impeachment” during its open public hearing Tuesday.

The committee vote paved the way for the presentation of evidence by complainants/endorsers and cross examination of witnesses by panel members on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, for the sake of fair play and due process, the Committee on Justice gave Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez until Tuesday, March 8, to personally answer the charges in the two separate impeachment complaints before the House committee. — Marvin Segura
