District 1 Councilor Myra Paz Valderozza-Abubakar has been elected chairperson of the Philippine Councilors’ League (PCL)-Zamboanga Peninsula Chapter, an aggrupation of municipal, provincial and city councilors from all over Region 9.

Abubakar handily won the post as not one from among the 3 provinces –Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay challenged her even if they had the numbers. She took over the post from Councilor Luzviminda “Bebe” Torrino from Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte.

The elections for the 2013 PCL-Zamboanga Peninsula Chapter officials was the highlight of the PCL’s Regional Assembly held at the Alindahaw Hotel in Pagadian City last Friday, November 15.

Abubakar expressed gratitude to the PCL-Region 9 members for their trust and confidence as she vowed to initiate strategies to ensure  closer ties between members from the 3 provinces and Zamboanga City for the benefit of the entire Zamboanga Peninsula.

“Our priority is to ensure that all the 3 provinces and Zamboanga City will continuously communicate and coordinate with each other through the officers and board of directors so that the crisis that happened in Zamboanga will not happen elsewhere in Region 9,” the lady councilor shared.

It is also her priority to promote unity and solidarity of all the members.

Other elected officials were Dipolog City Councilor Dante Ricky Bagarinao- Vice Chairman; Labason, ZN Councilor Riza Melicor- Secretary General; Titay, Zambo Sibugay Councilor Cheryl Salinding- Auditor; Labason, ZN Councilor Shane Galon- Public Relations Officer and Board of Directors- Councilors Ernesto Mondarte (Pagadian City), Charlie Mariano (District 1, Zamboanga City), Danilo Abico, Sr. (Diplahan, Zamboanga Sibugay), Alma Cabale (Gutalac, ZN), Lycel  Castor-Tan (Diplahan, ZN), Jorge Gonzales (San Pablo, ZS), Melba Tenorio (Mutia, ZN) and Noel Gonzalo (Tukuran, ZS).

The Philippine Councilors League intends to establish a strategic and accessible forum for giving life, meaning and substance to the concepts of decentralization and local autonomy, crystallizing and expressing ideas of primordial concern to the PCL and strengthening public-private sector relations towards local development among others. — Sheila Covarrubias
