The City Government has launched the annual Christmas lantern competition in line with the Pascua na Zamboanga festival.

The contest is open to all except City Government officials and employees. Only 25 lanterns will be officially accepted to the competition with the following criteria: indigenous material- 5%, originality-20%, artistry- 20%, symbolism-25% and craftsmanship- 30%.

Interested participants may secure registration form at the City Tourism Division located at the Paseo del Mar. Deadline for the submission of entries is on Monday, December 16, 2013.

Final judging and awarding of prizes will be on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at 6pm at Plaza del Pilar.

Lantern entries must use the colors of Christmas, must be visible or lighted at night and must be made of an all weather material. Lantern entries will be evaluated and officially qualified and accepted to the competition. All entries should not be more than 1 meter nor less than one half meter in diameter (measurement will be taken from one end of the widest part of the entry to the other end). Entries found to exceed and below required measurement will be automatically disqualified.

Winners will receive cash prizes and trophies- first prize- P10,000; second prize- P7,000; third prize- P5,000; fourth prize- P3,000 and fifth prize- P2,000.  Non-winning qualified entries will receive a cash consolation prize of P1,500.  Top three winning entries will automatically be the property of the City Government.

Meanwhile, the Canciones de Zamboanga, the annual Christmas choral competition is moved to December 18 prior to the awarding ceremony, 5pm at Plaza del Mar. The change of date was decided to encourage more participation from elementary schools. — Sheila Covarrubias
