A member of a notorious kidnap-for-ransom gang operating in the city headed by Pingli brothers was tagged as one of the gunmen who shot and killed a company driver and wounded his niece during a botched holdup in Mercedes last November 14.

Police identified the suspect as a certain Memay, a resident of Sitio Tawi-Tawi, Taluksangay while his cohort remains unknown. Both of them are still at large.

Memay’s named surfaced during a relentless investigation being carried out by men of the Culianan Police Station.

Investigators were still gathering more evidences and looking for witnesses for the filing of charges against the suspects.

To recall,  Luciano Saavedra y Araneta, 54, married, driver of Mercedes Shell Mini Mart and Shell Gas Station owned by the Tan family, was driving a Honda Civic car with Julia Ruth Tan y Morales, 18, a student, her younger sister, both daughters of the owner of the company, and one store employee aboard, on their way home coming from their business place located at Km. 12, Mercedes, when two gunmen aboard a motorcycle staged a holdup after the car stopped to drop the employee at their residence at the intersection of Calle Real and San Isidro Street in Mercedes proper.

The gunmen demanded from Saavedra a bag containing the day’s earning of the store and gas station. Saavedra resisted that prompted one of the gunmen to shoot him and Tan.

Saavedra sustained two bullet wounds in the body and was declared dead on arrival at a hospital where Tan was admitted for treatment.

The gunmen sped towards Taluksangay and failed to get the money from the victims in the aborted holdup. – Dan Toribio Jr.
