The government is embarking on a program aimed to protect and preserve maritime prohibited areas against illegal fishing and and destruction of the environment.

Supt. Rollen Arino, chief of the PNP Maritime Unit-9, said the five-year program is a joint undertaking of the Department of  Agriculture, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. It started last year and will be completed in 2017.

Arino, who attended a conference in Manila last  November 26,  disclosed that  the program is dubbed as “Improved for Sustainable Fisheries ( ECOFISH ) program.

Under the program,  the government agencies involved will continue to train people in coastal areas to plant mangroves so that more fish will be spawned for food security. The people will be taught on the importance of preservation and protection of the environment for future generation.They will be advised not to engage in illegal fishing.

Meanwhile, Arino said his command continuous its seaborne patrol operations to monitor if there are commercial vessel s fishing for tamban or (sardinella) as the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has declared the period from December 1, 2013 to March 30,2014 as ban on tamban fishing .

“ We are very vigilant and continu our operations to monitor and check if there are fishers catching tamban in the region,” Arino said. — Allen Abastillas
