Tourism Assistant Secretary Arturo P. Boncato Jr. has urged the participants to the “First Regional Tourism Summit” to help the tourism industry in the region and make it strong because tourism is a livelihood, employment and income generating for the people and the government.

“It is not only the work of the government, but also of other stakeholders like those involved in tourism related businesses and the people to go after people who destroy the tourism industry  most especially in the frontline services like discourteous, unruly and disrespectful  drivers who are cheating the visitors, strangers and most especially tourists coming in the region,” Boncato said.

He said the government, the people and all stakeholders must work together to  come up with a strong will to impose discipline for a strong tourism industry and to punish those who destroy the tourism industry so that tourists will be safe, protected and secured.

Boncato cited Davao City which is now one of the best tourism destinations and investors haven in the country

“Taxi drivers in Davao are one of the best in the country. They are courteous, respectful, neat and clean.  Kahit kulang ang  pambayad mo sa taxi kausapin lang sila. Sila’y nakaintindi at nakangiti pa,” Boncato revealed.

He explained that the tourism industry in Davao City is good because the government works hand in hand with the people and all stakeholders in imposing discipline and law and order. “It did not happen overnight. It was a long process and time investment and hardwork,” he said. — Allen Abastillas
