Lamitan City Mayor Rose Furigay and Vice Mayor Roderick Furigay yesterday led the cutting of ribbon during the inauguration of a P2 million detention cell in Barangay Lagasan, Lamitan City.

Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) officials and the members of the Lamitan City Council  were also present in the affair.

The mayor thanked the BJMP for appropriating the amount for the establishment of the local jail saying the facility will decongest the present city jail.

The mayor assured the city’s full support to the jail facility including its vision and program for the inmates.

Jail Sr. Insp. Christopher Ramirez, BJMP Disbursing Officer under the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao, disclosed funds for the project has been appropriated by the BJMP-ARMM.

Ramirez commended Furigay for donating a portion of the city government lot for the implementation of the project.     The prison building has two large cells that can accommodate 200 inmates per cell, according to Ramirez.

Aside from the jail, Furigay disclosed, the offices of the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Education and the Bureau of Fire Protection are also set to be constructed in the same lot during the first quarter of next year.

Lamitan City is expected to become the Regional Seat of the ARMM because of its proximity to all the provinces. — KS
