At least eight bunkhouses with 10 units/rooms each were turned over yesterday afternoon by the Army’s Engineering Brigade to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the city government headed by Sec. Dinky Soliman and Mayor Beng Climaco.

The eight bunkhouses are now ready for occupancy by the internally displaced persons (IDPs) or the evacuees from Rio Hondo and Mariki whose homes had been razed by fires at the height of the 23-day siege last September.

Soliman said five more bunkhouses are under construction and are expected to be completed this weekend in time for the visit of President Aquino on Sunday.

By yearend, there shall be  total of 21 bunkhouses completed in Taluksungay that will provide temporary but more comfortable and safe shelters for the IDPs pending the completion of the permanent shelters that will be constructed under the build back better strategy.

It will be recalled, the city government along with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and UP PLANADES recently presented to the multi-stakeholders the proposed Zamboanga City Roadmap to Recovery and Reconstruction (Z3R).

Barring any hitches and minor changes, the rehabilitation plan will be implemented early next year as all sectors, including the IDPs themselves and the Darul Ifta have already given their approval to the plan.— Vic Larato
