Sulu Rep. Habib Tupay Loong, chairman of the House Committee on Muslim Affairs, has urged House members to consider increasing the allocated budget for the rehabilitation of Zamboanga City following the 23-day crisis.

In his courtesy call on Mayor Beng Climaco Friday, Loong shared a copy of the manifestation requesting for an additional P2 billion budget for the “rehabilitation and reconstruction of Zamboanga City, and recovery assistance for the City’s residents including its informal settlers”, which he presented during a plenary session in Congress.

The requested additional budget, said Loong, will be drawn from the proposed P14.6 billion supplemental budget which is currently being deliberated.

The manifestation, which was put forward in behalf of the Muslim congressmen and congresswomen, and members of the Committee on Muslim Affairs, noted that while the national government has committed P3.8 billion, this is not enough to cover the massive rehabilitation and relief efforts necessary to bring the City back to its feet.

“We have to really help the City to stand up again,” said Loong.

The manifestation for the request is currently under consideration.

Climaco expressed her gratitude for the continued support exerted by Loong, along with the people of Sulu, for their continued support to Zamboanga City. Earlier on the same day, the provincial government of Sulu through the Provincial Women Council, donated a cash assistance amounting to P1 million and 6 trucks of assorted relief goods for the rehabilitation efforts of Zamboanga City. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
