The Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-ZDN) turned over recently shared service facilities (SSF) in the form of fifteen 500-kilogram capacity platform weighing scales to two small rubber farmer organizations in the municipality of Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte.

DTI-ZDN provincial Director Noel Bazan disclosed that the provision of said SSF facilities in the rubber buying stations  (bagsakancenters in local parlance) in PoblacionTampilisan and in Barangay Situbo is in response to the farmers’ longstanding complaints of underweighing by some traders who reportedly use “doctored” weighing scales in buying their products.

He also said that it is high time for small rubber holders togo higher in the value chain of rubber products for instance, by producing and selling direct to the export market products like ribbed smoked sheet (RSS) or crepe which command better prices instead of just crumb rubber.

Bazan said that for next year, his office envisions to provide the rubber associations not just weighing scales but SSF facilities for RSS or crepe production. “Of course, this can only be done with the help of our partner agencies like DA, DOLE, TESDA and DOST together with the local government units and our representatives in Congress”, Bazan added.

“We have already the concept for this - where the needed eguipment and fundings would come from, including working capital for the small rubber coops and we hope we could put this to reality by next year”,. Bazan said.

Mr.RogerLalag, President of the Federation of Rubber Farmers Association of Tampilisan (FRAT) expressed his gratitude for this help from the government. He said that his group looks forward to the realization of the RSS and crepe rubber SSF. “Meanwhile, he added “that the weighing scales turned over to them already constitute as answered prayer in resolving the issue of underweighing, a problem that’s blamed for the continuing marginalization of our members”..

The turning over ceremonies of the 15 platform weighing scales was conducted during the First Municipal Rubber Summit in Tampilisan in the presence of Mayor Angeles Carloto II, DA-9 officialsand member-beneficiaries of the proponent rubber associations — LSV
