Seven people were killed and four others were wounded when a suspected member of the Abu Sayyaf Group hurled a grenade onto a crowd that was celebrating New Year’s Eve in Sitio Fine Tree, Tumahubong, Sumisip, Basilan.

Five of the seven fatalities were identified as Rey Limbin, Elbert Gomoba, Kitarul Kaddik, Leniebel Cisneros and Lourdes Ablong. Three of the four wounded were Rining Dingcong, Janice Dingcong and Jessa Dingcong. The two others were minors who were taken to the hospital.

DZT gathered that a crowd gathered at a basketball court chatting while waiting for the clock to strike 12 to welcome the new year when they heard something fell in their midst. A couple of seconds later a grenade exploded before 10 p.m.

The wounded victims were taken to hospitals while the bodies of the fatalities were  brought to a funeral parlor for post mortem examination.

Bomb experts retrieved  some fragments at the blast site that led to the finding that it was a hand grenade (cacao type) that was lobbed by the attackers.
