Senator Alan Peter Cayetano extended to Zamboanga City the assurance that, despite the spate of calamities which hit the country last year, the situation of Zamboangue?os has not been overlooked by the national government.

“You are not forgotten,” assured Cayetano who flew in Tuesday to extend moral support and to do what he can for the City.

For her part, Mayor Beng Climaco expressed her gratitude to the Senator for his assistance and continuing support to the City.

During his one-day visit, Cayetano discussed various developments within the Senate, including the proposal to establish a national emergency response department, and the approval of a Php 140 billion rehabilitation fund for the different areas affected by calamities. He also provided additional inputs for the Z3R plan which was presented by City Planning Officer Rodrigo Sicat.

The Senator said that he found Zamboanga City to be peaceful and back to normal, with the local government committed to see through the rehabilitation and peace-building efforts. The greatest challenge, however, is convincing potential investors, businesses and visitors.

“Malaking kalaban natin ang perception,” he said.

Cayetano also revealed that all Senate investigations have been put on hold in order to focus on the finalization and approval of the national and supplemental budget. Investigations for the different national issues, including the Zamboanga Crisis, may resume this month.

The value of this investigation, said Cayetano, was not to point fingers but to avoid future crises, and to establish proper protocols to be implemented during volatile security situations.

Meanwhile, Councilor Roel Natividad presented to Cayetano a sponsored resolution expressing the gratitude of the City Council for his support and efforts to raise funds for Zamboanga City through the PBA basketball fundraiser games held at the Ateneo de Manila.

The same token of appreciation was also given to former PBA player Noy Falcasantos and other Zamboanga City athletes for their contributions and efforts. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
