Over 5,000 high school and college students signed up for inclusion in this year’s Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) which will commence April 12.

The city government has allocated a total of 3,186 slots for this year’s SPES, a joint undertaking of the city government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). Registration started February 21 concluded March 10.

City Social Welfare Officer Francisco Barredo said of the 3, 186 slots, 1, 540 will be filled by college students who will compose the first batch and will be assigned to the different offices of the City Government. Their 20-day term of service will begin on April 12 and will end first week of May.
The second batch will composed of 1,486 high school students and  will commence work immediately after the completion of the term of the first batch.

The CSWDO thru its Public Employment Service Office (PESO) will conduct the final assessment of the applicants who should be 15-25 years old, must not have a failing grade and with an annual family income within the Family Threshold Level of P36, 000.

Barredo said Mayor Celso Lobregat has consistently increased the number of work slots due to the increasing budget of the City. Allocation for the SPES this year is P9 million.

Last year, the City allotted 2, 909 work slots for the program with an allocation of some P8 million.
Moreover, Barredo said, those qualified and selected by the barangay councils shall be required to comply with the Land Bank Forum for the 40 percent counterpart.

Now on its 17th year, the SPES in Zamboanga boasts of a number of beneficiaries who were able to finish college and eventually land decent jobs because of the summer job program. — City Hall PIO
