“To the criminals, your days are numbered. Leave Zamboanga City now or perish.”

Thus the stern warning issued by newly-elected Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) President and Councillor Jerry “Totong” Perez during his inaugural speech at the Sangguniang Panlungsod (City Council) yesterday.

Before winning the Liga (ABC) election that has entitled him to sit as ex-oficio member of the City Council, Perez was a barangay official who is rumored to have been employing hardline policy against criminals and lawless elements.

He said he will be working with the Committees on Peace and Order headed by Councilor Roel Natividad and the Committee on Disaster Preparedness and Awareness being chaired by Councilor Jawo Jimenez together with all the concerned government agencies, private and religious groupd, to come up with measures to deal with the prevailing peace and order situation in the city.

“This representation will work hard together with Councilor Natividad in order to have police and military visibility in the different areas, thereby creating a ‘quick-response’ in every situation. Together with our police and Task Force Zamboanga, we will strengthen our resolve to put an end to these senseless killings in the city,” Perez said.

He also expressed gratitude to Mayor Beng Climaco for empowering the barangays during Climaco’s term as congresswoman of District-1 through the Barangay Emergency Network Group (BENG).

“We will expand this noble initiative of Mayor Beng by strengthening the Barangay Intelligence Network (BIN). We will formulate a system to validate barangay intelligence reports before forwarding them to the City’s Peace and Order Council. With this, we’ll create COMPAC unit in different barangays as frontliners for the solution of peace and order problems,” Perez stressed.

He also expressed all-out support to the administration of Mayor Beng Climaco on the priority programs including Security, Health and Education (SHE) and District-1 Congresman Celso Lobregat plans and programs for the city.

“This representation will help realize the dreams and aspirations of the city, for tranquillity and progress of Zamboanga for the future of our children,” Perez emphasized.

He also thanked and commended his predecessor Abdurahman B. Nuño for serving the Liga Ng Mga Barangays for many years of dedicated service as ABC president and member of the City Council. —  MLF
