The Office of the City Veterinarian (OCVET) reported a decrease in the number of rabies cases in 2013 compared to 2012.

City Veterinarian Dr. Mario Arriola said one rabies case was recorded in 2013 as compared to three in 2012.

Arriola said the lone rabies case in 2013 was reported in the district of Vitali, east of this city.

The city official attributed the decline in the number rabies cases to public awareness on the importance of immunizing their pets.

He however said that the number of dog bite cases went to 4,000 in 2013 or 1,000 more than to the 3,000 cases in 2012.

With this, he urged pet owners to be responsible by taking care of their pets properly, especially for dogs that needed to be vaccinated against rabies.

Arriola said his personnel are going around in the city’s barangays giving free anti-rabies vaccination on dogs and cats.

He said they are also conducting information dissemination in the barangays concerning rabies and responsible pet ownership. — RGAAG
