Five houses were gutted down in a fire that broke out in Sta. Maria before noon yesterday.

The blaze took place around 11:30 a.m. on an interior neghborhood accross the street from Edwin Andrew Air Base (EAAB). It was placed under control in less than an hour.

Firefighters rushed to  the area to prevent the fire from scattering on other neighboring houses.

Some residents told reporters that before they saw the fire, they heard burst of gunfire coming from one of the houses that were destroyed.

Many residents carried their valuables outside for fear they would be burned in the blaze.

DZT gathered that the owners of some of the affected houses were the Resaba and De Leon families.

Fire and police investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire and the estimated damage it has brought. —  Dan Toribio Jr.
