Troopers from the Army’s 1st Infantry Division have successfully driven off a force of 40 New People’s Army (NPA) fighters during an encounter at the boundaries of Sitio San Isidro, Barangay Sta. Maria and Sitio Lapanan, Barangay Morob, Leon B. Postigo town, Zamboanga Del Norte Friday morning.

The encounter took place around 9 a.m. No casualties were sustained by government forces, Maj. Edmond Abella, the unit’s spokesperson, said.

He added that the encounter was in response to a report by concerned citizens regarding the presence of the heavily-armed rebels in their communities.

Abella said their troopers were able to outmaneuver the NPAs who were occupying a higher ground but later backed off when additional troops arrived.

He believes the NPAs sustained several casualties as evidenced by the bloodstains in their routes of withdrawal.

Recovered were assorted propaganda materials, personal belongings, and various subversive documents of high intelligence value.

In a related development, Dioscoro Lauranilla, chairman of Barangay Calube, San Miguel, Zamboanga del Sur, was disarmed of his .45 caliber pistol  by NPA rebels.around 9:30 p.m.Thursday.

Police said the village chief was inside their residence when 20 fully armed communist rebels clad in military camouflage uniform surrounded their house. Then two of them knocked on the door and requested the barangay chief to come out as they pretended to talk to him.

But before he went out of the house, Lauranilla peeped on the window and saw one of his barangay kagawads, identified as Aurelio Supelanas with the group.  He then went out and was surprised when the armed men introduced themselves as members of the CPP/NPA/NDF. They demanded of his 45 cal. pistol.

The armed men threatened him to ransack their residence if he will refuse to give his pistol and will hold him as hostage.

The village chief has no recourse but to heed to the demand of the armed men.  After receiving the demanded firearm, the said armed men proceeded to Barangay Concepcion, San Miguel.

Lauranilla and the kagawad were invited to San Miguel Municipal Police Station and were advised to give their sworn statements for the filing of appropriate charges in court against the armed men. – Dan Toribio Jr.
