Mayor Beng Climaco on Wednesday minced no words in urging the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) leadership, particularly the Bangsamoro Transitional Commission (BTC) chaired by Mohagher Iqbal, to educate and instruct their members on the ground not to perform any and all acts that may derail the peace process.

Mayor Climaco reported to the BTC commissioners during the forum last Tuesday that on January 17 a group of MILF members attempted to put up an MILF political office in Barangay Cawit and just last Tuesday (Feb. 11) a group of individuals claiming to be members of the MILF attempted to conduct an MILF-related activity on Sacol Island but was prevailed upon by the police.

“For the MILF leadership, take full supervision and control of your members. You should educate appropriately and immediately instruct them to cease and desist from performing any and all acts that may derail the peace process,” Climaco told the BTC commissioners.

She reiterated that the city government of Zamboanga and its people are supportive of the peace process. “We are not the ones derailing it, and we are surprised by the unauthorized activities by the so-called MILF members. We ask you to take actions on this,” she stressed.

“We strongly urge the city of Zamboanga or any of its component barangays be excluded in the Bangsamoro Juridical Entity,” the lady mayor reiterated even as she lamented that despite the city’s stand, tranquility in this part of the country has been disturbed by MILF and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) members.

For his part, Commissioner Iqbal in his opening statement said that of all places in Mindanao, “Zamboanga City stands towering as a symbol of contrast nay diversity and one of its envying assets is its diversity. It is a melting pot of all tribes and traditions.”

“It is time to change our outlook from seeing only through unity where there is commonality among us to looking at where we differ,” he said. “We have nothing to lose when we unite or at least understand each other because after all we have as much difference as we have commonalities,” the BTC chairman said.— Vic Larato
